A Quick Recap of the 2017 BET Awards

Last night on June 25th, 2017 BET aired their annual BET Awards live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Like every year during this event it was filled with a lot of memorable moments all hosted by the hilarious and SNL regular, Leslie Jones. With appearances by Kofi Siriboe, Cardi B, Issa Rae, and so many more beautiful black folk, it was hard to only tune in for the amazing performances. With so many moments that went down this year, I’m going to bring you some of the top trending ones from last night’s event.

One of the first iconic moments of the night was the acceptance speech by the ever so elegant Solange Knowles as she accepted her Centric Award for her beautiful hit “Cranes In the Sky”. She started off by thanking her supportive and loving family and then thanking BET for showing her images of black queens such as Lil Kim, Kelis, Missy Elliot, and Erykah Badu while growing up. She also gave a shout out to all the new schoolgirls including Kelela, SZA, and Syd for their artistry. So proud of you Solo!

Xscape Reunites to Bring Back 90’s R&B Nostalgia

The 90’s was filled with so many good R&B jams and a couple of them resurfaced last night thanks to the comeback of 90’s super girl group Xscape. After breaking up in the early 2000’s due to disagreements between group members, Kandi Burruss, LaTocha Scott, Tameka “Tiny” Harris, and Tamika Scott they are finally back together and better than ever. Their performance at the award show was their first televised performance as a group since the breakup and they definitely delivered. The group performed three of their biggest hits while the crowd sang along to every word.

Chance the Rapper Becomes the Youngest Artist to Receive the BET Humanitarian Award

One moment that everyone is still defiantly talking about is when Chicago’s own; Chance the Rapper accepted the 2017 Humanitarian award. It’s not a secret that Chance has always been a man of the people and with all the volunteer work and donations he has contributed, BET knew that he was well deserving of such an honor. Chance was given the award by BET chairwoman Debra Lee and was even given a special thank you from our forever first lady, Michelle Obama via video message. I think that it’s pretty obvious that Chance will to continue to give back to the communities as well as give us good music.

With her recently released debut album “Ctrl” hitting the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 200 chart, SZA has been doing nothing but making positive moves recently and getting her spot on the BET stage has only been a small fraction of them. With a small technical difficulty interfering with the beginning of her performance, SZA pushed through and her performance was nothing but perfection. Starting off by preforming her hit “Love Galore,” SZA surprised us all by also performing her song “The Weekend” as well.

You can watch SZA serve “TLC Fanmail Era” looks and sweet vocals now here.

Remy Ma Wins Best Female Hip-Hop Artist

It was the moment we were all waiting for. Who was going to win Best Female Hip-Hop Artist? With seven-year streak winner Nicki Minaj not attending this award show, we had a feeling someone new would break the chain. That woman was the Bronx’s very own rap star Remy Ma. After serving jail time, making a come back with one of the biggest hits last year (All The Way Up w/ Fat Joe), and making one of the most iconic dis records of all time with her track “SHETHER” towards Nicki, Remy was nothing but deserving. Her acceptance speech was nothing but old school Hip-Hop glamor as Remy shouted out her hometown, her man, and her former prison. Congrats to Remy Ma for taking home the most anticipated award of the night.
