With hit records produced by Pharrell, features on tracks with the likes of Busta Rhymes and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and six studio albums under her belt, Kelis deserves nothing but the best as she celebrates her 38th birthday in Tijuana. The R&B songstress has been posting many photos and videos to her Instagram account sharing her birthday adventures filled with family, friends, and lots of good food.

In most recent years Kelis has been more known for her food than her voice. Since graduating from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in 2010 the artist turned chef, has done a number of food projects including a cooking TV series, having her own food truck at the 2014 SXSW music festival, and releasing her first cookbook ‘My Life on a Plate’ in 2015. Even though this multi-talented star has shifted lanes in her career, she still works within the music industry. Kelis released her latest full-length album ‘Food’ in 2014 and even performed live while pregnant at Brooklyn’s AFROPUNK festival in 2015. From coming into the game in 1999 at just 20 years old, Kelis has become nothing less than iconic from her signature style to her one of a kind voice.

Kelis released her debut studio album ‘Kaleidoscope’ on December 7th 1999. The album was a body of work like no other in its time period. With the charts dominated by teen-pop artists like NSYNC, Brittney Spears, and Christina Aguilera, Kelis brought a more rebel R&B/ Rock/ Hip-Hop sound, way different from her peers in the music industry. With the entire album produced by Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams better known as ‘The Neptunes’, the project contained a sound from another planet. Kelis’ first lead single from the album ‘Caught Out There’ was in a lane of it’s own as Kelis is heard legitimately screaming on the track.

The single became a hit due to its uniquely produced sound and female empowering message. The single’s music video also introduced the world to Kelis’ signature style of a brightly colored afro and dyed eyebrows. The debut album also produced two other hit singles ‘Good Stuff’ and ‘Get Along With You’ which showed that Kelis alongside The Neptunes was a dream team from another world.

Kelis released her second album titled ‘Wanderland’ in 2001 which did really well over seas with it’s only single ‘Young, Fresh n’ New’ reaching number 32 on the UK Singles Chart. Kelis then released her third album ‘Tasty’ in 2003. The album was under Pharrell’s new label ‘Star Track’ and like the first two albums; the project was produced entirely by The Neptunes. The project featured the songs ‘Trick Me’ and ‘Millionaire’, but it also debuted the biggest hit of her career ‘Milkshake’. The album overall showed a more sexier and mature side to Kelis as she continued to rise in her stardom.

After a 3 year hiatus due to problems with her record label Kelis released her fourth album ‘Kelis Was Here’ in 2006 under an entirely new production team and label. This album gave her the smash hit ‘Bossy’ and revealed the singers new look leaving behind the curly fro for a short bob style.

After a marriage and divorce to Hip-Hop heavy weight Nas, and giving birth to their child Knight in 2009, Kelis headed back into the studio to drop her most unique project to date. Kelis released her fifth studio album ‘Flesh Tone’ in 2010 which was her first time creating a dance/techno album. The album’s first single ‘Acapella’ was a highly energized dance anthem that solidified Kelis in the dance world and even reached number one on the U.S. dance charts.

In 2014 Kelis released her latest album ‘Food’ which was an ode to her family and her new journey within the food industry. With songs like ‘Jerk Ribs’ and ‘Breakfast’ Kelis expresses her love for having a good time with good people, good vibes, and of course good food! The album consisted of a more chill and laid back feel, which was different from all her previous projects.

With all of her accolades, Kelis is without a doubt a living legend. With the release of each of her albums bringing in a new era to her life, she’s always remained true to herself and pursued whatever made her happy. Her style has always been ahead of the game as she continued to evolve gracefully through each era.
