Ari Lennox's Sultry "Shea Butter Baby" Visual

BY NIAIA BOSTON

Soulful songbird, Ari Lennox and J. Cole released the sultry music video for her single “Shea Butter Baby,” which is featured on Creed II: The Album soundtrack curated by Mike Will Made-It.

Directed by Bennett Johnson, the visual immerses us in a hazy, tantalizing world of black lovers. Their brown skin, curves, and tresses are illuminated by the glow of orange and yellow hues guiding us further into fantasy as Lennox entices, singing, “You lost in the shape of my hips / Hope there is a mood / If you really down, we can find it / Lost in an alley, make love by a trash can.”

Nearly a siren song, the play between seduction and a dreamlike escape is refreshingly well-done as we watch Lennox entrance her on-screen lover, turning him from being an impassive partner to an enamored participant. J. Cole balances out Ari Lennox’s warm vocals with a cool self-awareness and acceptance of having been charmed.

The intimate visual comes off the heels of J. Cole’s 2019 NBA Allstar Halftime Performance in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Dreamville head honcho is set to drop the Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation where we can also expect to hear an appearance by Ari. The singer is also gearing up for the release of her debut album, also entitled Shea Butter Baby, coming soon.
