The Second Black Model to Open Prada's Show Since 1997 Anok Yai Makes History

BY ASIA RIDDICK

History was made at Prada's fall 2018 show when Anok Yai became the second black model since 1997 to open, with Naomi Campbell being the first. Prada which seemed to had been lacking in the diversity department for decades sparks a necessary conversation on the need for more representation within the fashion industry.

With a lot of work to be done and a lot more doors to open, we are overjoyed by Yai's success. From being discovered last fall at Howard's Homecoming to then being signed only weeks later and now making history and breaking barriers in fashion. Taking to Instagram, she expressed her gratitude saying, "This is something that I’d only dream of. Thank you, Ms. Prada,… and the Next team for giving the little girl from Manch a chance. Can’t believe I’m the first black woman to open for Prada since queen @iamnaomicampbell, forever grateful…" signing off her caption with "PRADA CHIC."

As we stay tuned for Yai's journey, we hope to regularly see more diversity in fashion, not just every 20 some odd years
